Family sizes & habituation status

Bwindi holds 19 habituated gorilla families across four sectors. Mgahinga has one—the 13-member Nyakagezi group. In May 2023 they crossed into Rwanda for three weeks; in October they stayed put. That volatility is why Mgahinga permits cost the same $800 even though trek times are shorter. The upside? When Nyakagezi cooperates, you trek through golden-monkey bamboo straight onto the saddle between three volcanoes.
